The hills just stay there, don’t they? So we think.
We have no inkling of shifts of strata underground.
They seem immovable, eternal, unimpressed
by rain and sleet storms streaming overhead
A gravitational solid for our wandering eye.
A compass point to hold us on the ground
when, foundering, we seem to lose our way.
